Good morning Vietnam!
"Life should not be about the number of breaths you take, but the number of moments that take your breath away"
Let's the adventure begin. Tuk tuk coming to pick us up from the hostel. We changed to a bus that took us to Kep, we waited there for a while for a mini van, and I thought the driver would be the same crazy one that took us from Sihanoukville, he recognised us, but was not him after all that would drive us to Vietnam. We crossed the borders, very fast actually, in the Vietnamese part they took our temperature and checked we were healthy, I have no idea why we had to pay 1 dolar for that? Then the driver took us to the other part, asked for 2 dolars for the stamp and we crossed the border walking. Waited there for the next bus that only took us to the closest bus station. Here we waited for 2 hours and I had my first Vietnamese soup, feeling like home, as every weekend we go to the Vietnamese market to get Pho Boh soup in our gastronomical weekends in Brno. First stop of this new chapter is Can Tho.
We arrived in Can Tho after almost 12 hours, the hostel we stayed in was super great, the atmosphere was like home, Yen, the owner, was super nice and happy girl, wish I could take her in my backpack with me. We arrived late so we just had some food and straight to bed. Next morning 4:30 am to take the Mekong Delta tour, going around in this little boat seeing how they trade and sell fruits in the floating market. We had 3 different kind of breakfast, Banh Mi, which is bread with anything inside, Vietnamese coffee, which is so sweet, I can't even smeel it. I have to ask always without sweet milk and sugar, they look at me like I'm a crazy person, which I am, but my coffee needs to be black please! Our second breakfast was noodle soup, fruit and more coffee. We visited a family Noodle's factory and I tried making some noodles, I guess I was hired after trying my best to do the noodles. Our last breakfast was pizza noodles, fried noodles with egg and other things, was very interesting. We went back to the hostel for a siesta as we woke up so early, we were dead. As we loved the hostel and the place we extended one more night and next morning we went for a bike ride around the countryside, but first we had to cross the city with the crazy traffic and the thousands bikes everywhere. Was a very nice ride and very hot too, once back we decided to have a family dinner at the hostel and cook something from each country. Was a great time in Can Tho.
Time to move on, Ho Chi Min city or also known as Saigon. If you think you have seen traffic, you haven't been to HCMC yet, I thought Greece was crazy but this in on another level. So many bikes everywhere, cool thing is that you learn how to cross the streets Vietnamese way. I love walking around the cities, getting lost and going everywhere by feet, this way you discover unknown places. We went to the Remnants war museum, very interesting and shocking place to learn about the war in Vietnam and how they suffer and are still having consequences of this horrible war. Next stop Cu Chi tunnels, were the guerrillas hide during the war and how they survived under ground from the attacks of the Americans, very interesting place to go.
Getting buses now is something so natural, what is 5 hours on a bus? It gives you time to read, write or just enjoy the beautiful landscape, I'm ready for everything now.
Short stop in Mui Ne, I felt like in Russia, everything is translated into Russian. This days were just partially to relax, swimming pool, food, massage and manicure again. We took a very early tour to see the sunrise in the white dunes which was super nice and beautiful. The bad part of our stay here was the inconsiderate people in our dorm, they didn't let us sleep not even one night.
Dalat is our next destination, so far the way there it's stunning, green, you can feel the temperature already dropping. I have the feeling it will be a special place to be.
And it really was, what a beautiful city, green and full of flowers everywhere. All these different colours and shapes of flowers makes the city, the flower city. We arrived to Da Lat and Mr Happy's team came and picked us up in 2 motos from the bus stop. So happy to welcome us, we felt immediately like home. Our first afternoon in the city we just decided to walk around, grab some food and coffee. Always walking around a city and getting lost is the best way to really know the city. Once back to the hostel we decided to do the walking tour to the night market and a visit to the maze bar, very interesting house, very crazy, but after 1 beer we were dead and decided to go back home as we had a full day the next day.
They call it the easy riders, you have a rider that takes you to all the sites in the countryside and you just need to focus on the amazing landscape around you. What a great day we had, not even one drop of rain and full sun, we were very lucky. What an amazing feeling to feel the wind in your skin and the sun in your face, feeling of freedom. Du and Sam took us everwhere, waterfalls, coffee plantation, happy Buddha, for lunch, I even ate a fried cricket, what a crazy experience! What a great way of ending our day than having a nice dinner at the hostel and a karaoke night with Mr. Happy and Sam! They are all happy and kind, I just wish them the very best in life!
Off to our next stop, Hoi An, 15 hours of night bus awaits us, let's see how it goes!
Well! It's never a nice sleep on a bus, but it was not so bad, and we survived the ride to Hoi An.
We ended up staying for 3 nights in this pretty city. It's known for being one of the UNESCO world heritage cities, and damn it's a really pretty city! First day went on a bike tour to the marble mountains, but boy it was hot! Like 38 degrees and so humid the only moment you somehow enjoyed was being on the bike to get some air.
Walking around the city by night is very crazy as it's full of tourists everywhere, Chinese are everywhere! The city is amazingly beautiful with all these colourful lanterns everywhere. We ended up drinking some free beer in the next door hostel and had a great time playing yenga!
We decided to rent a bicycle and bike around the city and to the nearest beach. Of course we are riding under the sun and we see the magic word manicure spa, what we did? Stopped to treat ourselves! I have never done so many massages and mani/pedis, shame on me! But I really love it. Riding the bike in a crazy country, were traffic is insane, is a huge accomplishment, so much stress with the bikes everywhere, the horns every two seconds and crazy traffic, now I can bike everywhere in this world! The landscape to go to the beach is so green and beautiful with the rice fields, stopping on out way back to see the nice sunsent and for a few pictures, it's just breathtaking.
I'm trying so hard every day not to fall asleep before 10 pm, this night I managed to cross the line and went to bed at 2 am after a few beer and a few reggeaton songs.
On our last day here, we rented a moto and went to discover the other city called Da Nang, very big and modern beach city. Of course when your friend just learnt how to ride a bike you feel a bit nervous, but we managed to survided our tour. When riding back home the rain caught us, which was very interesting and funny, and of course very wet!
Off to Hue, the Imperial city of Vietnam, beautiful old citadel and great landscape around the city with old tombs and temples, 2 days discovering around in a bike are good enough. Of course as in every city we are looking for the best Indian food, and Hue was not the exception. I know Indian is not very typical food but we do love it! It became a tradition now so in every city we look for nice Indian food.
Our next stop is Phong Nah, we are meeting some friends over there to discover the caves and surroundings, let's see what we will encounter over there. And yes there is the biggest cave in the world, but to get in you need to pay 3,000 USD and there is a huge waiting list, crazy!
I think this will be the longest post on my blog, as I am traveling more than a month in Vietnam, bare with me please!
The feeling of being in between green mountains, river and blue sky is indescriptible. We stayed here 2 nights and 2 full days of discoverig caves and the surroundings. We went to Phong Nah cave with a small boat ride, we went to paradise cave, which was huge, and a hike in the botanical garden which ended with a nice swim in the waterfall, oh yes that water was amazing and cold. We also went to the dark cave and I conquered my fears of heights. Yes, I did a zipline and also jumped to the river from some ropes, oh boy I'm a chicken, but once I'm there it feel amazing. Our night bus to Tam Coc was around 9 pm so we had some time to relax in the swimming pool and get ready for one more long bus ride.
Arriving at 4am to Tam Coc was not so bad after all, the people from the hostel gave us the room at that time and we were able to sleep for a while before our full day of discoverings.
They call Tam Coc the terrestrial Halong Bay, what an amazing place, between mountains, rice fields, blue sky, white clouds, it's like paradise. We went on a 2 hours boat ride around the river with some breathtaking views. In the afternoon we rented a bicycle and we went everywhere, temples, mountains, rice fields and we ended our day hiking few stairs to have the best view I've had in a long time. Our last morning here we rented a moto and went around for a couple of hours to the ancient capital and the surroundings. Off to our next stop, Cat Ba, getting closer to Halong Bay and meeting all our French friends we collected around Vietnam!
When you are backpacking you always try to do the cheapest, not because you are cheap, but this way you can enjoy more things, Cat Ba should be the cheap version of Ha Long Bay, same same but still the same. We arrived to Cat Ba to this nice hostel, with a swimming pool, which was very hot, so not refreshing at all! We decided to stay 3 nights here just to relax a bit after rushing around. Our first day we just rented a bike and enjoyed the ride around the island, we went for a small hike to the national park and visted yet another cave, we ended our day watching the sunset in the cannon view point, what a nice view of the bay. Next day we took a tour around the bay and some islands, it's very beautiful, but definitely the water colour is not so nice as other places in Asia. But oh boy the views after hiking in the monkey island were just amazing, was a great boat tour. Of course ending our time in Cat Ba without massage would not be the same!
Hanoi, crazy city, full of bikes and traffic, which makes it special and beautiful at the same time. Walking around the old town is nice, having one of the best Banh mi sandwich in the small streets of this chaotic city, drinking good Vietnamese coffee or just hanging around was great. After long time without partying, yes I changed, I don't party so often here, I am destroyed and tired, so even if I want to party when I wake up, at 10pm I just want to sleep, I'm getting old! We ended up in a very local club, with this crazy music, Vietnamese people blowing laughing balloons and drinking Bia (beer) or a kind of redbull. We didn't last long in there. As Hanoi is a big city, you cannot do much appart from walking around the city and getting lost, getting juices, coffees and massages. We did go to see a water puppet show, which was really nice and different, oh yes and we went to the cinema, a very prehistoric one.
My time in Vietnam is almost coming to an end, one of my last stops is Ha Giang. Here you rent a bike and do a loop of 4 days 3 nights around the nature and the mountains. This was the best part of my whole trip to Vietnam, I don't have words to describe what I saw and what I lived there. We arrived in Ha Giang around 4 am, the bus just left us in the middle of no where, so we had to walk around 3km to get to the hostel. The owner was there and took care of us, I really have mixed feelings with Vietnamese people, some are really nice and pure, others are just not nice and want to take advantage of you all the time. But I got to the conclusion that when it's a touristic place they really are not nice, but here in the north it's not so touristic and they are original and sincere, when they smile at you it is real. When we woke up after 3 hours sleep, we really didn't know what to do, to go on the loop or just a small one and go to Sapa, thank the universe we decided to do the full loop. Riding through green mountains, so many different kinds of green, mixed with blue sky, white clouds, pure air in your face, sun burning, then suddenly rain. We drove through mud, rocks, dust, up hills, down hills, we fall couple of times trying to balance the stones. Women and kids along the way waving at us, you could see on their faces sadness and tiredness, but one smile and a Hello, made their day. I really cannot imagine how hard they work every day, with sun, rain, crazy roads, really hard work, and we are always complaining about our jobs and life, when it's so perfect and easy, really what the hell do we think, we are very lucky people! The views of the nature and the landscape were just amazing, breath taking, no words to describe the feeling I had over there. Just Amazing! After 4 days and 3 nights riding, meeting some amazing people along the way, locals, foreigners, riding in very hard roads, feeling afraid of falling from the bike more than a couple of times, being on the floor once, having a local helping us, flat tire, or having our friend's bike broke in the middle of nowhere, keep riding through these amazing and beautiful place made my trip here one of the pick moments. Thank you Ha Giang for this special and great time, I will always keep you in my heart and memories.
Now back to being solo, my next stop is Sapa, and the last stop in Vietnam!
Here we go again, yet another bus ride, this one was crazy, the roads were destroyed and the ride was bumpy. We arrived to Sapa after a couple of hours and Mama Sa was waiting for us in the bus station, we had another ride to her homestay that was like 15 km from the city. The view from the house was just magical, nothing more to say, just wow. My first night we were just 5 plus the full family, we had dinner, what a dinner, was huge, for an army. Mama Sa kept saying if we don't eat all there would not be sun tomorrow, we just ate like no tomorrow, so of course the sun was out the whole day. Our first trekking around the corn fields, the rice paddies was just magical, seeing all the kids around and the villages with their women wearing the typical cloths was something magic. We ended up our walk with a nice swim in the waterfall. I was just sitting in a rock contemplating the kids playing in the water, it was so nice and funny to see them half naked jumping from the rocks. The only bad thing about Sapa is that it's so touristic that it feels a bit fake and all these kids and women are just attacking you to buy things from them. We went back to the homestay for a shower and yet another huge dinner, now Mama Sa cooked for an army of 9! What to say about the breakfast, it was also delicious and huge. Second day of trekking was pretty much the same but in a different road. Of course my adventure in Vietnam couldn't finish without an amazing bike ride in the most bumpy road ever.
My last stop in Vietnam was great and lovely, I leave this country with happy memories and nice moments! Come on' ( thank you!) Vietnam and hope to see you again, Chuc may man, good luck!
Off to Laos, let's see what will be written in this story.
