Madrid, the "Fiesta or siesta" city!
And here we are again! Madrid is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe, you can find so many things to do and see! The easiest way to get down town from the airport is using their metro, just paying 2 euros. When buying your tickets you can pick a metro map, it will be very usefull because their metro is really big and confusing! There is only one line from the airport, the pink line N8, to get more direct down town you will have to change at the end of this line (Nuevos Ministerios) to the blue line N10 in direction Puerta del Sur and get off in Tribunal where you will have to change one more time to the lightblue line N1(direction Valdecarros) and get finally off at Sol or Gran via! But be careful in the subway, they can steal you wallet!
Well as I told you before we booked in this very central hostel in Gran Via called Metropol Equity point (http://www.equity-point.com), just in Madrid's heart. Not a very nice or new hostel but for the price and the services it was worth it! Breakfast was included, but if you wanted a linen to cover you, you had to pay 1 extra euro (although the heating was really hot you need an extra linen to cover yourself).
Madrid is very big city but you can see most of it if you like walking. Some sightseeings you have to see are Puerta del Sol, where you can see the famous statue of a Bear climbing the Madroño tree, which is the symbol of Madrid. Also here you can see the kilometer zero, where the measuring of the national highways begins. If you continue walking you will find the Plaza Mayor, another place you have to visit. Near Plaza Mayor you can find the Mercado San Miguel where you can stop and get something to eat. If you continue walking some minutes you will find the Almudena cathedral and next to it the Palacio Real, one of Madrid's most beautiful building, also you can see the royal gardens and take a walk inside. Not far from there you can see the well known Plaza de España with a sculpture of Cervantes and his famous Don Quixote and Sancho Panza. Wondering around we came across with an Egyptian temple, Templo de Debod, here you can have a great view of the Palacio Real! Continuing our tour of Madrid, you have to walk around Gran Via and take a look to the great shops, some how you feel like you are wondering in New york city! Gran Via is one of the busiest aveniues in Madrid. Now if we cross all Gran via we will find Plaza Cibeles and further down the famous Puerta de Alcala!
Last but not least you can have a great day at Parco el Retiro and wonder around the beautiful trees and the large lake! You don't need more than 2 days to visit all these wonderful places, and you can leave another day for a day excursion to Toledo. You can check train tickets at renfe's web page (http://www.renfe.com/), trains come out every 30 minutes and you can buy the tickets 20 mins before they leave! Getting to Atocha Renfe station is easy, you just need to take the lightblue line N1 from Sol or Gran Via, direction Valdecarros, and get off Atocha Renfe stop!
Enough of sightseeings, it is time for Tapas! You can start at El Tigre tapas bar, very near Gran Via (calle infantas 30), the best tapas of Madrid, just try to get there as soon as you can because is always full! Another nice place for tapas and cañas is in calle Barcelona 4, near Plaza del Sol, Bar En busca del tiempo. You can have very nice tapas and if you can get there before 8 you can have 2x1 with your cañas, very good deal if you want to get drunk and have a great time! If you are hungry the best deal in Madrid is to go to a buffet restaurant, they have everywhere and you can have all you can eat for only 10 euros! Try to find one chain called FresCo, for 10 euros you can eat and drink as much as you want! Get lost and enjoy wondering around Madrid, the city that never sleeps!
